Last year, when we commenced offline classes, our teachers faced a lot of difficulties to proceed with the regular syllabus. Lockdown impact on students was worse than we thought. Students of the same class were at different learning levels and it made the teaching more difficult. After numerous meetings, teachers decided to give a halt to the standard syllabus and to start from the scratch. Teachers were in desperate need to address this issue and that’s when we decided to use Pratham Reading Assessment Tool. All of our teachers attended Pratham Assessment of Foundational Reading course online and we administered the reading assessment for the students of class 1-5. The assessment gave a deep insight into the reading level of students. We decided to launch remedial classes and start tutoring students based on the assessment results. We are now on the fifth month and we are seeing promising improvement in our students.

Teachers might do their best to help students with or without a tool, but, administering reading assessment gave a new perspective of scientific approach in evaluating students. This also gave a targeted vision to teachers, as now they have real-time data on hand which they collected. The ownership of the process and clear targets helped a lot in designing solutions and implementing it in classrooms.

This little human here is the mirror of our class. You teach a new concept, revise or perform any activity – his face will tell how the whole class is feeling about your interaction. He is full of real, genuine emotions – happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust – all of it. This little one taught me how much important it is to express ourselves and how important it is to value other’s emotions without judging.

Earlier, when we play a movie or a song or anything entertaining, kids were hesitant to enjoy it earlier. May be because laughing during class was not considered as the trait of a “good” student. Introduction to happiness curriculum has helped a lot in addressing these tiny instructive mistakes and even helped us teachers to enjoy the teaching process along with the students.

In Indian education system, on an average a teacher work for 7 hours within school ( plus preparation, corrections, special class, other gov duties, chores etc). During this 7 hours, a teacher interact with 80-100 students – students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds – with entirely different learning styles. Yeah, its actually a tough job ☺️ !!!

A teacher’s emotional state directly impact their students. No doubt that pandemic has taken a severe toll on our teacher’s mental health. Teacher’s emotional well being is a hardly discussed topic even within academic spaces. Don’t you think it is a high priority concern to be addressed?

We are trying to initiate a talk within our school – on teacher’s mental health, their emotional resilience and a lot more.

Thus, last week, we have tried a bingo game – teacher’s version. This was inspired by a post shared by Gavin ❤️ McCormack on kindness bingo.

The bingo game created a new wave of energy and open communication among my teachers. Rather than a competition, this ended up in a collaborative work among them.

Peer engaged studies from young age are great opportunities to maximise student’s healthy social interaction.

Peers helping out each other to study will develop their social and individual life skills. Practised from a young age, this will help them to identify their learning styles and lead self learning at its best.

November 14 is celebrated as Children’s Day every year in India. The special day is celebrated in remembrance of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Lal Nehru, born on November 14, 1889. This day marks Nehru’s devotion to education, student welfare and development of children and young people – the future of the country.

To make this day memorable for our little ones, Cultural Department and English Department of Vidyadaan School organized Children’s Day with great enthusiasm on 15 November 2021 in the school premises. The program was conducted in the Lunch Hall which was decorated with the art & crafts made by students during the competitions held for this occasion. The program was also live streamed on YouTube for the primary classes.

The day started with a welcome speech by our principal, Anu ma’am, who emphasized on the importance of planning for their future. Going forward, the students were shown a wonderful video compiled by Chetan Sir which included a small skit by our school teachers and wishes from higher officials which brought a smile to their faces.

The tiny tots of our school – students of LKG, presented a fancy dress show and a rhyme narration. Their enthusiasm and their cute outfits spread cheer across the hall among students and teachers alike. This was their first in-school event after the pandemic and the efforts put in by the Kindergarten teachers was commendable.

A fun guess game was organized for the students where they were shown childhood pictures of teachers and were asked to recognize them. This game brought a lot of excitement among the students as they were trying hard to identify their teachers which kept them standing and screaming throughout the session.

The next part of the event was a surprise for the students from the teachers – a group dance. The energetic teachers of our school put up a mind-blowing dance performance that included various regional dance forms such as Bhangra, Garbha, Kolata, classical and south Indian mass beats. The students were thrilled to watch their teachers dance and kept encouraging them throughout the performance with their claps and cheers. 

The final act for the day was a dance performance cum workshop by professional Hip-Hop artists Raju Sir & Nanditha Ma’am. This performance/workshop was conducted in the basketball court as students would get more space to dance. Post their energetic dance performance, the dancers taught our students some basic hip-hop moves which each child learnt with complete concentration. The highlight of this workshop was that, some of the teachers also joined in to shake a leg with the students. The excitement and happiness of the students was beyond words.

The day ended with lunch for the students and teachers and the students were sent off with a snack box each as a token of love from their teachers. It was completely a fun filled day for the children.

Vidyadaan celebrated World Space Week, a first of it kind initiative. World Space Week is a UN-declared celebration of space held annually, every October 4 to 10. It is the largest space event on Earth, with over 8,000 events reported in 2019 and held in 96 countries.

These events are organized by thousands of organizations, including space agencies, aerospace companies, astronomy clubs and museums.

The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

The celebration consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. World Space Week celebration aim to; Provide unique leverage in space outreach and education, Educate people around the world about the benefits that they receive from space, Encourage greater use of space for sustainable economic development, Demonstrate public support for space programs
and Excite young people about STEM fields.

In 2021, World Space Week is dedicated to the theme of “Women in Space”. The theme is selected to promote women participation in space science. Vidyadaan is proud to be a part of the world celebration of space.
